SUMMARY:Batuan ‘Inventing Art' Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:10am - 4pm Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August 2018\n\nI Made Griyawan is a Balinese artist born in Batuan\, Bali - Indonesia in 1979. Made has been in several group exhibitions in Bali\, Japan and the USA. This will be his first trip to Australia. As part of The Grand Hotel Townsville Artist in Residence (AIR) program\, Made will be travelling to Townsville for a week long residency and deliver a two day masterclass workshop for local artists. Read more about I Made Griyawan here. You can also see an amazing virtual collection of painting from Batuan here.\n\nPurpose of workshop:\n\n\tTo provide an understanding of the Batuan philosophy and culture\, and how this influences Batuan Art\, both personally and practically.\n\tTo provide a practical understanding of Batuan drawing and painting techniques\, including use of materials and their applications.\n\tIt is envisaged that by Sunday afternoon\, workshop participants will have complete a simple painting applying Batuan drawing and painting techniques.\n\n Day 1:\n\n\nIntroduction about Batuan painting history\, and a brief overall summary of Batuan painting techniques and materials to be used. Made will provide copies of his demonstration booklet which participants will use to develop their skills. Participants will be working on a paper medium only. Made will then give a practical example of how a Batuan painting begins by sketching the design by pencil onto paper. Participants will then be asked to copy his designs that are provided in the booklet. Made will supervise and assist in this process. Following in the day this process will be repeated\, as Made demonstrates and then assists in the further techniques of Batuan painting: Highlighting the design in black ink\, shading and layering\, and colouring.\n\nDay 2:\n\nWorkshop participants will be encouraged to copy one of Made’s complete paintings (provided in the demonstration booklet) or create their own\, applying the Batuan techniques learnt the previous day. By the end of day 2\, it is hoped that participants will have completed their painting\, but if not\, they are able to carry on after the workshop.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\n\n\tPaper: The best type of paper to use is Arches watercolour paper or equivalent.\n\tDrawing: 2B sharpened pencil and fine black ink pen. Ruler and rubber.\n\tShading: Fine watercolour brush and Chinese ink.\n\tPainting: Fine watercolour brush and acrylic paint.\n\nMembers Price: $140 - Please log in to receive this discount
