SUMMARY:Watercolour Paper Casting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Umbrella and Umbrella's exhibiting artists Rhonda Payne and Jane Hawkins (from Mudpickers) from 10am - 12pm Saturday 10 April 2021 to create a textured and coloured paper artwork. Participants will learn a quick and easy paper casting technique\, taking impressions from plant material and leaves\, then introduce some colour onto the newly-made wet paper surface by staining / washing with a “wet on wet” watercolour technique.\nTickets $80 members ($100 non-members)\nFor Umbrella members\, log in to your account to receive your workshop discount\nLimited to 12 spaces | Bookings close 5pm Friday 9 April 2021\nBeginners to professional artists are welcome. Participants should wear closed-in shoes and old clothing or an apron as the workshop may get messy! All other materials will be provided. This workshop will take place in Umbrella’s downstairs Makerspace at 408 Flinders St (next to Mary Who? Bookshop and opposite Woolworths).\nJoin Umbrella Floortalks | Mudpickers to hear from the artists (and others from the exhibition) prior to their workshop\, and see our other workshops here.\nJane Hawkins MCA\, and Rhonda Payne BVA(Hons) were both born in North Queensland and both have spent the majority of their careers working in the arts/education sector. They have exhibited together in the last two Strand Ephemeras along with Jane’s sister Sally Munns (Highly Commended in 2019) and the team has been selected again for the 2021 exhibition.\nJane Hawkins is probably best known for her life-size bronze figures\, including the Johnathan Thurston statue\, although her personal arts practice is often in a diverse range of 3D materials\, often with a focus on natural forms. Rhonda Payne is a proficient portraitist\, with commissions including Prof. Colin Roderick\, Prof. Bill Williams\, however her preferred practice is drawing in mixed media on non-traditional supports such as rolls of canvas or sails\, drawing inspiration from local people and places.\nVisitors must comply with Umbrella's COVID-19 Safety Plan and directives | Gallery open Tues-Fri 9am-5pm | Sat-Sun 9am-1pm | Gallery closed Mondays\, public holidays and during exhibition install weeks. Follow our social media for updates. | Images (top): An example of Jane's cast paper pieces from the Mudpickers exhibition; (middle): Rhonda Payne (left) and Jane Hawkins (right) speaking at the opening of the Mudpickers exhibition; (bottom): one of Jane's cast paper examples.
