28/05/2013Townsville Artist selected for Telstra

Umbrella Member and Townsville based artist, Gail Mabo will exhibit her artwork for the first time in the prestigious 30th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. The exhibition is held annually in the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin. The Award attracts a range of Indigenous artists from all parts of the country and about 100 works are selected each year from around 300 entries. Mabo’s monoprint titled, Before Time was created during a master class at Umbrella Studio, facilitated by Theo Tremblay for Murris in Ink Printmakers. Gail is a founding member of Murris in Ink, a collective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island artists who live and work in North Queensland. The group have been working with various printmaking techniques and learning from some of Australia’s greatest printmakers since 2008. 26/05/2013Sea and Sky: our country and its creatures Monoprints by Murris in Ink Printmakers – a book published by Umbrella Studio

Part of the brief for the recently completed Townsville Hospital Commission was to  compile information about the Murris in Ink printmakers and the artwork stories for the waiting room at the Townsville Hospital. With the help of an online book publishing company we created a professional, full colour book that will reside in the Imaging Waiting Room and be enjoyed by the hospital’s patients and their families. For those of you who don’t know about Blurb, it is an online publishing company. Blurb self-published books are bookstore-quality, printed on gorgeous paper and can be designed with either a hard or soft cover, we selected the hard cover for the Imaging waiting room. Our book titled, Sea and Sky, our country and it’s creatures provides details of the mono print process, and then introduces each of the Murris in Ink printmakers with detailed stories of each work installed in the Hospital….

Powered by 2Technical Thanks to the friendly folk at 2Technical, we now have free WiFi for guests in the gallery! This means you can enjoy your coffee at the mini café, and bring your smartphone, tablet or laptop to get access to the internet. Of course, your device will need to have WiFi built in. The network is password protected and encrypted, so your data is always safe. You can get the password from the café area. This is a perfect way to checkout extra exhibition content using QR codes in the gallery that link to the artist talk, or the massive QR gallery on the side of our building. 20/05/2013Update on Touring Exhibitions

Compact Prints 2012 International Tour has continues to its next location, Wharpuke Print Studio in Kerikeri, New Zealand. There will be a closing event 5pm Tuesday 28 May. Ngapa – Kai Kai by Murris in Ink started the year in Texas then to the RM Wiliam Centre in Eidsvold and is now heading to Longreach and then Ingham to Tyto Art Gallery. Land and Sea started the year at the Noosa Regional Art Gallery and continues on to the Pine Rivers Art Gallery, Gayndah and Mundubberra. We would like to thank Artslink, who continue to promote regional artists by managing the touring of Ngapa – Kai Kai and Land and Sea.
