22/09/2013Light on the Fringe – Project Success!
Whilst New Media art has a reputation for alienating audiences, the recent Light on the Fringe event forged a new and real connection between viewers and a well-known Townsville public space. Light on the Fringe saw the collaboration between New Media artist Robert Cripse and a group of local artists to produce a series of outdoor light installations projected onto the exterior wall of Umbrella Studio. The event, which coincided with the biennial Strand Ephemera public art festival, gave viewers an insight into the world of light installations and projection mapping. Monumental, vibrant and playful describes the final compositions. As a secondary Visual Art teacher, the workshops that lead to the final installation were invaluable for gaining skills in manipulating digital film and learning new approaches for experimental design. Robert Crispe’s deep involvement with his art form, combined with his knowledge and raw talent, enabled participants to make real creative…

20/09/2013Update from Aber
Update from Aber: Umbrella artist member Jenny Mulcahy has embarked on her sensational three month residency at the Aberystwyth Art Centre. It is now two weeks into my residency and much of that time has been spent setting up my studio, gathering materials and sorting I.T. connections. I have also had my first play with a variety of local clays, all of which are very nice to work with…..even the terracotta, which I normally loathe and avoid as I find it sticky and unpleasant to work with. I am sharing the flat at Godre’r Glas with two other artists, Tereza, a Czech photographer who is based in London and Endel, a performance/mixed media artist from Cork, Ireland. As well as being flat mates our studios are located close together which will be good as we’ll be able to see and discuss each other’s work as it progresses. I have…

16/09/2013New exhibiton venue
Umbrella Studio artist members have a brand new venue (literally) to showcase their work. In appreciation of their support for local arts and their ongoing sponsorship, Umbrella will curate a series of annual exhibitions in the stunning new Townsville Bulletin building located on Flinders St. West. Ann Roebuck, Umbrella Board member and Bulletin managing editor suggested that Umbrella could grow their viewing audience by exhibiting in their busy and beautiful office space. The Bulletin installed a hanging system on several interior walls, and the first exhibition of works on paper from the some members of the Studio Printmaking group is currently on show. With over 100 Bulletin staff and business people coming and going every day, the artwork will be seen, appreciated and potentially connect with a buyer to purchase it. For information on exhibiting artwork at the Bulletin contact Umbrella Studio.

11/09/2013Reborn Etching Press
Umbrella has a wonderful new/old press. This press was one of Umbrella’s original presses going back over 26 years. The story is; someone took it home and left it under their house for over 10 years to rust and corrode from salt water. Jo Lankester, one of our printmaker members rescued it and brought it back to us, but it was in terrible shape, destined for the dump. Jeff Vickers, former JCU sculptor technician – an amazingly and handy guy, has completely restored it. We just got it back from Jeff all shiny and painted, with new bits and rolling as smooth as silk. We will use our reborn press for travelling workshops, school groups and as an extra press. We have named it the “Vickers Press” for obvious reasons.
10/09/2013CIAF Presents wrap up
CAIF Presents was a more understated Cairns Indigenous Art Fair for 2013, but the program included high quality exhibitions, informative forums, dance, music and theatre performances. In August I travelled to Cairns to spend three days working with Gail Mabo at the opening of Umbrella’s exhibition featuring Murris in Ink printmakers and sculpture from Girringun Art Centre artists. Sea and Sky was held at the wonderful Canopy Artspace on Grafton Street. Umbrella hired the front gallery space for three weeks because there was no exhibition organised for the Cruise Ship Passage Terminal during CAIF 2013. Hopefully that important art event will return as part of CAIF next year. Canopy Artspace is the home of well-known print studio Editions Tremblay as well as an important exhibition space for regional artists. Canopy is nothing flash, it is a refurbished old shed with plenty of FNQ personality and equipped with everything required to…
