26/05/2014Compact Prints 2014 Residency & Pop Up Shop

Umbrella Studio is calling for expressions of interest for local printmakers or artists for a five week residency in the upstairs gallery space. The duration of the residency is from Sunday 17 August through 21 September. The selected resident artists will have the opportunity to create a new body of work in the Main Space of Umbrella. The resident artist will be featured in our marketing and promotions during the Compact Prints 2014 exhibition. Umbrella is also calling for expressions of interest from Umbrella Members to exhibit and retail their artwork in the glass display case during the future exhibition periods. Paint the dry tropics of beautiful Townsville on location with Sylvia as your guide. With many years experience as an artist Sylvia has captured the Australian landscape en plein air from the beach to the bush criss-crossing Australia in search of subjects for her paintings. With 45 solo shows and over 50 art awards Sylvia has tutored many budding artists in workshops through TAFE and ArtEscape Cairns. This workshop is specifically designed for adults 18 years and over with some previous painting experience. Enrol early to avoid disappointment, as numbers are limited. Increasing retail sales is one of the strategies the Board and the Director have implemented, aimed at increasing generated revenue and decreasing reliance on Government funding. The reasoning behind this decision makes good business sense, because since 2008 Umbrella has annually published a substantial number of works on paper from Umbrella members and particularly the Murris in Ink printmakers. In years past these prints were commissioned and sold to individual clients. Then from 2009 till 2014 Umbrella facilitated workshops for MII to create prints for exhibition and sale at our booth in the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, as well as Artslink travelling exhibitions and in-house exhibitions, marketed on the Umbrella website gallery and for the occasional one-off buyer. Faces of Townsville: Locals feature in outdoor exhibition

Twenty Townsville locals are about to receive star billing in the Faces of Townsville outdoor exhibition launching on May 9. Umbrella Member, Margot Douglas is featured on the outside of the Umbrella building. The exhibition is a partnership between ABC Open and the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and coincides with The Percivals, a city-wide festival celebrating portraiture. Running until July 13 Faces of Townsville gives locals the opportunity to be a part of the festivities. The local portraits for the exhibition were created as a part of ABC Open’s Snapped project. Each month Snapped creates a challenge to help amateur photographers to learn new techniques. Snapped recently asked photographers to take portraits that captured the many faces of Australia. More than 1000 portraits were submitted, including many from North Queensland. Umbrella Touring Exhibition: Mabo Kara Art

The solo exhibition by Gail Mabo, Mabo Kara Art, in Torres Strait Island creole language means Mabo My Art, will open on 11, June 2014, at the Australian High Commission in Singapore. This is the first solo exhibition for a North Queensland Indigenous artist and Umbrella Member at the High Commission in Singapore. Gail Mabo has produced 29 stunning new works for the show including; linocut prints, monotype prints, screen prints and acrylic paintings on canvas. The exhibition came about last year when Umbrella Studio Director Vicki Salisbury, travelled to Singapore to install and open Compact Prints 2012 at the James Cook University campus in Singapore.
