Join Umbrella and local artist Jonathan Stigter 10am-12:30pm Saturday 26 June 2021 to learn the fundamentals of cartooning. Jonathan will share his approach to creating comics and crafting a unique cartoon style, and will guide participants through the following:
– common materials and tools best suited for making comics
– exaggerating standout features from reference images
– drawing from imagination
– crafting short visual narratives (theme, world, characters, plot)
– designing characters, developing storyboards and loose panel compositions
– pencilling the outline of a final page
– inking a final page

Participants will develop and take home a black and white, fully-inked comic page featuring their own characters.

Intermediate artists looking to extend their skills in cartooning are encouraged to attend, however beginners are also welcome. Participants should wear closed-in shoes and comfortable clothing, and bring their own sketchbook or paper and any reference images they wish to use. All other materials will be provided.

Jonathan ‘Jono’ Stigter is a Townsville-based independent cartoonist and illustrator who creates comics featuring strange characters and unusual stories. Jono holds a Bachelor of Creative Media (Honours) and a Bachelor of Creative Industries (both from JCU, Cairns), and has worked as a graphic designer, sessional lecturer and sessional tutor. Drawing has helped Jono through the darkest parts of his life, and her wants to share with people that creating honest expressions of thought and feeling is incredibly valuable to oneself and others. The artist is passionate about the physical processes of putting pencil to paper and making marks with ink. He finds inspiration for his stories and characters by observing the world, elevating the mundane, everyday situations and imagining creatures based on those naturally coexisting outside our front door.
