Improve your rendering skills using gouache with Dr Robert Preston

10am – 1pm both days – Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July 2016
The workshop is divided into two consecutive parts across this weekend. Both parts must be attended to gain benefit.

This workshop is not suitable for beginners as a reasonable level of practice is required. The workshop introduces (or reacquaints) participants with the procedures and skills involved in creating a highly finished painted rendering in tone (Grisaille).
Participants will receive a step by step introduction, guidance and demonstrations in:
- Transferring & developing suitable drawing from photographic source material.
- Accurate mixing and matching of tonal values.
- Painting techniques and associated skills appropriate to this particular genre.
- The introduction of techniques and other media to assist in bringing the work to a high level of finish (the use of dry media and simple airbrushing).
- Developing a suitable master drawing, block-in and a tonal map.
Participants should bring the following:
• A smooth A2 size drawing board (8mm-10mm MDF board or similar is good)
• Two 500g empty jam jars or similar
• A clean white china plate (dinner size)
• Pencils H, HB, B, 2B and a good quality white eraser (no gum or putty)
• A small craft knife with a new blade
• A lint free cloth e.g. large handkerchief
• A 30cm ruler preferably wood or rigid plastic
• Magic tape
• A good quality, sharp black and white photographic image, print or a high res photocopy. The image should have good contrast and be approx. A5 in size – Still life, objects, figures are suitable; (no landscape images)
• Something for morning tea
If you have had any previous experience with gouache and watercolour rendering and have serviceable materials e.g. good quality brushes Nos.0-2 , slant or well-tile
palettes or black and white gouache (not acrylic) bring them along to supplement those provided.
