This illustrated presentation by Jolyon Drury will talk about his father Paul Drury – the printmaker and the man.
Jolyon will discuss a number of underlying themes running through the talk; the influence of Paul Drury’s father who was the sculptor Alfred Drury RA, Paul’s lifelong Goldsmiths College (London) friends including Graham Sutherland, their pastoral etching development stimulated by Samuel Palmer, the perfection of the hand-drawn, hand-printed etching, and the pivotal role that Paul Drury had within the group and the developing conflict between representational and abstract art.
Jolyon Drury is a painter-etchers son (Paul Drury), a sculptor’s grandson (Alfred Drury), trained as an architect at Cambridge but now does something entirely different for the day job. Jolyon is custodian of the family collections and has a bit of a print collection of his own, following the title of his book ‘Revelation to Revolution, the legacy of Samuel Palmer. The revival and evolution of pastoral printmaking by Paul Drury and the Goldsmiths School in the 20th century’.
