This hands on workshop with demonstrations by the instructor explores techniques that artists may not have encountered previously. The class introduces
the following approaches to watercolour (as time permits):
• Use of intaglio line in watercolour;
• Use of raw pigment in washes;
• Use of solvents to create line;
• Watercolour techniques using resists;
• Grisaille watercolour techniques;
• Techniques of hatching with watercolour;
• Controlled techniques for wet-on-wet watercolour
Participants should bring the following:
• Basic watercolour kit (i.e. watercolour tubes/pans in a range of colours; several sheets/a small block of watercolour paper; a small range of watercolour brushes; a watercolour palette/plate)
• A sharp pointed tool that can scratch lines into paper (e.g. an etching needle/knife/nail)
• 2 large garbage bin liners or a drop sheet to protect the tables
• 1 bucket
• 1 hair-dryer, plus extension lead
• 5 small bottles (preferably with lids) for mixing and holding liquids and pigments
• An old toothbrush for rubbing paper
• A roll of paper towel
• 1 clean and dried egg shell (it will be mashed so don’t worry if it’s broken)
• A towel that has no embroidered textures or tears that will be thoroughly soaked with water and may gather splashes of watercolour on it.
• A happy, relaxed attitude and willingness to help fellow participants
• Something for lunch
