08/05/2018Overview – Andrew Bonneau’s portrait painting workshop

Day 3_Final Pass6_Tony Fitzsimmons_30April2018

We were recently fortunate to be able to host Archibald Prize finalist, artist Andrew Bonneau, for a three day portrait painting workshop. In the three days we worked entirely from the model, concentrating on head/shoulders of the sitter. The workshop studio space was lit so that the model had a lighter and a darker side, to assist in the transfer of a three-dimensional image onto our working surfaces. The seated model was on an elevated platform, which brought her eyesight approximately level with the artists at their easels. All aspects of the process were discussed and demonstrated, such as proportion, anatomy, consideration of perspective, an appreciation of the form in relation to the light source and with this in mind modelling the form in three dimensions. General and specific oil paint procedures were covered, including colour theory throughout. The painting surface was prepared prior to the workshop, and instructions were…

Groovin the Moo 2018

AAIMG_4213

After many months of working on the Groovin the Moo community art project, we installed the teepees on Friday 4 May and went to check out the festival in action on Sunday 6 May 2018. Umbrella did 6 weeks of workshops to create our public art installation for the Groovin the Moo festival. The theme for this year’s festival was “Back to Craft”. Ann Bartholomeusz was the artist facilitator on this project working with Angela Little planning the artwork, delivering a series of community art workshops and then installing it at the festival. We had 40 people work over 200 hours to transform bamboo poles, garden netting and CDs into a giant crafty creation! We gave 35 free tickets to participants who attended 2 of the workshops and dedicated a minimum of 6 hours to the project. With a team of 6…

17/04/2018What’s going on with the Director?

IMG_2465

You might have heard it at our exhibition opening Friday night, or perhaps on the grapevine – but in any case, we thought our members would like to know what’s going on at the gallery. Director Jonathan McBurnie has been offered a 6-month temporary position as Creative Director – Galleries, Townsville City Council. This is a great opportunity for Jonathan’s professional development, and for Townsville’s galleries which are in some need of leadership. We are advertising to fill Jonathan’s position for 6 months – please check our “Work with us” page for those details if you know someone who could apply, and for the immediate time being, I will be acting as Director until the position is filled, having established relationships with our government partners. If you’ve recently submitted an exhibition application, they have been assessed by the selection panel and Jonathan has passed on the letters which will go out…

26/03/2018Call for artists: Andre Reynaud’s Festival 2018 project

Vue From Gregory St

Hello. My name is André Reynaud and I have been put in charge of theming the Gregory Street entrance of Queen’s Garden for the Commonwealth Festival 2018. I have submitted a project that has been accepted. It consists of a Bamboo structure supported by 2 scaffolding towers ( 1.2m Wide, 2.4 m Long and 4.8 m High). I am planning on dressing that gate with pot plants, palms etc and having art works amongst it. I have been trying different ways of showing what I envisage and failed with a full blown 3D rendering (my poor computer crashed multiples times) so I resorted to making a model that hopefully will show what I am expecting to do. You will find attached to this mail a bunch of photograph of that model and 3 views ( Top, Side and Front) of a trim down 3D rendering, without plants and art works. The…

08/02/2018Update – Pop Up North Queensland 2018

Pop Up North Queensland 2017

We would like to give interested PUNQ participants an update on where we’re at with Pop Up North Queensland for 2018. We still intend to continue the project alongside the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in July and August and even though the 2017 event was a success, unfortunately we haven’t yet had success in securing enough funding for this year’s event (sad face). The application with Tourism and Events Queensland was unsuccessful, with feedback that we needed more detail in our marketing plan to attract visitors from outside the Local Government Area. There was only one successful application in Townsville and the North Queensland region which was the Townsville Triathlon Festival. The other 31 funded events were outside North Queensland. Click on this link if you would like to see who was successful in receiving funding: http://statements.qld.gov.au/Statement/2018/1/12/queensland-events-benefit-from-funding-boost. The Festivals Australia grant was also unsuccessful, the program received a total…

29/11/2017Call for Exhibition: Expressions of Interest

PTSD Exhibtion - EOI-image

Umbrella artists are invited to show expressions of interest in being part of an exhibition highlighting portraits of people who have experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is an health issue which is often ignored both privately and publicly and it is hoped the exhibition will heighten community awareness. It is expected the exhibition will take place at Umbrella Studio in 2019 but an expression of interest will need to be lodged by 28 February 2018. We hope to be able to provide a sitter who has experienced PTSD if you are unable to source your own. There is also a curatorial opportunity for someone who would like to coordinate the exhibition and curate the show. Please make your expression of interest in the exhibition and any questions you may have by clicking here to email Jan Hynes

This program is supported by The Grand Hotel Townsville. At the end of October, we will be welcoming our annual international artist in residence, Jacqueline Aust. Jacqueline is from New Zealand specialising in printmaking, drawing and sculpture. She was selected this year for the 2017 Australia Print Council print commission. She will be using the our studio space to continue developing a series loosely themed on ‘navigating’ which has come about as the result of three previous artist residencies in Spain, Australia (The Art Vault, Mildura) and Rakiura-Stewart Island, New Zealand, between 2015 and 2016. We are very excited to have Jacqueline visit and use our studio and hold an artist talk and a master class workshop for our local artists.
