About the artist
Jo Lankester gained a Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) majoring in printmaking at the Victorian College of The Arts, 1994. Lankester is an award recipient of the 2nd Student International Art Biennial, Art Gallery Skopje, Macedonia, and the Canson National Student Print Award in 1994. Currently living as a practising printmaking artist in Townsville, gaining casual employment through various arts organisations and high schools as artist in residence and mentoring through workshops. Lankester was a sessional teacher at James Cook University from 1999-2002, then commenced work at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville, in exhibitions and collections until 2010 giving her an extensive knowledge of artworks from Townsville and far North Queensland.
Since 1998 Lankester has been editioning prints for artists including Ron McBurnie, Ray Crooke, Tate Adams and Anneke Silver. In 2010 she opened Brush & Press Studio as part of a Renew Townsville initiative holding exhibitions of local artists, predominantly printmakers, and sold past exhibition works of her own. During this time Lankester developed her skills as an independent curator with two exhibitions at Umbrella Studio in 2011. Lankester is a founding member of PressNorth Printmakers which formed in 2009 and in 2012 became the first President of the group.
Lankester is represented in the National Gallery of Australia Print Collection through the donation of prints by the Australian Print Workshop through Place Made in 2004, and by a private donor in 2002. Artbank purchased a series of small-scale prints of insects during her time as an access artist at the Australian Print Workshop as the recipient of the Canson Student Print Award. Lankester also has works in public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas.
