21/01/2014Opening Speech: SYNTHESIS by Robin Rodd

SYNTHESIS I’m neither a scientist nor an artist, but an anthropologist caught between science and art. So, by way of introduction to this exhibit, I want to touch on a couple of ideas about the relationship between art and science, what synthesis in this context might mean, and why this order of synthesis matters. Synthesis involves transformation of disparate elements into a new whole. This exhibit has united scientists from a range of disciplinary backgrounds and artists working in a variety of modes to develop projects that present ‘scientific ideas’ through ‘artistic processes’. Each of these collaborations has taken on its own life as the contributors have worked out ways, over the last year, of thinking about, transforming and presenting ideas in novel ways. Colours of the Coral – a new, exciting exhibition is soon to open at the Museum of Tropical Queensland! On Saturday, March 1st, the Museum of Tropical Queensland is launching a new and permanent Coral display called ‘Colours’.  In recognition of this important exhibition opening, the museum would like to enhance the Great Gallery space for a period of at least one month, with … corals and associated marine life. Corals or fish, jelly fish, crustaceans etc, can be knotted, painted, knitted, sewn, crocheted or drawn, and will be hung, strewn, placed, glued and fitted in and around the Great Gallery. The fish will need to be larger than life as they will be hung up high above the gallery floor.  We will also be including just one very large prawn.
