20/01/2015Carpark Creatives launch @ the Laneways

The corporate sponsorship from the Lancini Group funded this major project that began at the end of 2014. The Carpark Creatives Laneways project commissioned the student artists to design and paint four large panels, now installed in the carpark of City Lane. Hannah Murray facilitated the project and provided art mentoring for young artists in our studio space. Next time your at City Lane, check it out!

25/11/2014Pasifika Indigenous Arts Alliance Art Exhibition

  Support local Indigenous artists by attending the Pasifika Indigenous Arts Alliance Art Exhibition at the Townsville Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre over the Christmas break. It opens next week on 5 December and is on display until 16 January 2015. This exhibition is the first of many planned for the Pasifika Indigenous Arts Alliance Association (PIAA) The Association is made up of both Pacific Indigenous artists and arts lovers. To be exhibited will not only be artworks from the Oceania region but also carvings, films, music, dance and readings. There is also a plan to have workshops. The exhibition is a collaboration between our association and the Townsville Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre who have kindly donated space in the centre for this exhibition.PIAA is a non-profit Association with the proceeds of arts sales going straight to the artists.   It has truly been a great week for Umbrella Studio and NQ artists, with the launch of the Wanderlust exhibition opening at the Judith Wright Centre, Brisbane last Tuesday evening. The collaborative project between Umbrella Studio, PressNorth Printmakers, Flying Arts Alliance & the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts finally came to reality after one year of planning and organising. The exhibition Wanderlust by PressNorth Printmakers showcases the exemplary skills and talents of printmakers who are currently living and working in Townsville, North Queensland and beyond. The exhibition opened at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane on Tuesday 21 October 2014. APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED. Aberystwyth Arts Centre is calling for expressions of interest for their amazing residency program. Four Umbrella Studio artists have experienced the beauty of Wales by participating in this three month residency opportunity. The following dates are available in 2015 are: December 2014-February 2015 March – May 2015 September – November 2015 Artists must submit their application to Vicki Salisbury – Director of Umbrella, these are forwarded on to the Co-ordinator International artist in residency and selection committee for consideration. This is truly an amazing opportunity to work in one of the most inspirational settings on the planet and I encourage you to apply. A collaborative project between Umbrella Studio contemporary arts and PressNorth Printmakers, the exhibition PressNorth Printmakers: Wanderlust showcases the exemplary skills and talents of printmakers who are currently living and working in Townsville, North Queensland and beyond. The exhibition will explore a diverse range of themes displaying the variety of styles in the printmaking profession. PressNorth Printmakers is a not-for-profit artist-run-initiative with members actively exhibiting, teaching, sharing and earning a living from printmaking. Printmaking is widely celebrated within Australia with Townsville being one of the most vibrant and dynamic printmaking communities with artists winning awards in recognition of their skills across many mediums. Umbrella Studio has been part of the history of printmaking in North Queensland since 1986. From its inception it has provided the basis for the development, critique, facilitation and mentoring.   Luxlumin is a city wide digital projection festival. On 26 and 27 September 2014  the Townsville CBD will be transformed into an outdoor gallery as buildings are covered with light, colour and moving images. International, national and local artists will create mesmerizing works to electrify our city for two spectacular nights of free entertainment in Palmer Street, Victoria Bridge, Flinders Square, Sturt and Flinders Streets. Come enjoy a stroll on one of our guided tours or walk your own path and see the city in a new light! Umbrella Studio will be contributing to the festival by partnering with ABC OPEN to project local stories produced by local film makers entitled MEET YOUR NEIGHBOURS: LIFE IN NORTH QUEENSLAND.
