A multi-space exhibition that aims to celebrate both the art and architecture of the North Queensland and Townsville area. Townsville architect Terry O’Toole showcases his eclectic collection of commissioned works by local artists exploring the buildings and architecture of North Point Developments and Troppo Architects. This collection showcases the artistic talents from established artists such as Jan Hynes, Ron McBurnie and Anneke Silver to the emerging fresh talent of Carole Howlett and Mel Williams. Its last trip before heading home to Townsville is for the exhibition to be displayed at the Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba QLD from the 21 July – 14/ September 2014. Gail Mabo’s exhibition made a big impression in Singapore and she became the first Indigenous North Queenslander to have a solo exhibition at a High Commission in Singapore on June 11. Mabo Kara Art featured 29 artworks, including works on canvas, paper and fabric. The 350 VIP guests included International Business owners, commercial art dealers, High Commissioners from various countries, investment consultants, the National Arts Council of Singapore and others with links to Australia. North Queensland and all of Australia can be proud of the significance of the “Unity” event, which was a celebration of Torres Strait Islander Culture. Umbrella Studio Director Vicki Salisbury worked for over a year in partnership with High Commission staff to ensure the professionalism of the exhibition. The positive response from the audience to Gail and her artwork highlights the power of art to connect, build relationships and establish strategic networks for arts business….

Umbrella Studio is calling for expressions of interest for local printmakers or artists for a five week residency in the upstairs gallery space. The duration of the residency is from Sunday 17 August through 21 September. The selected resident artists will have the opportunity to create a new body of work in the Main Space of Umbrella. The resident artist will be featured in our marketing and promotions during the Compact Prints 2014 exhibition. Umbrella is also calling for expressions of interest from Umbrella Members to exhibit and retail their artwork in the glass display case during the future exhibition periods. 06/05/2014Faces of Townsville: Locals feature in outdoor exhibition
Twenty Townsville locals are about to receive star billing in the Faces of Townsville outdoor exhibition launching on May 9. Umbrella Member, Margot Douglas is featured on the outside of the Umbrella building. The exhibition is a partnership between ABC Open and the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and coincides with The Percivals, a city-wide festival celebrating portraiture. Running until July 13 Faces of Townsville gives locals the opportunity to be a part of the festivities. The local portraits for the exhibition were created as a part of ABC Open’s Snapped project. Each month Snapped creates a challenge to help amateur photographers to learn new techniques. Snapped recently asked photographers to take portraits that captured the many faces of Australia. More than 1000 portraits were submitted, including many from North Queensland. Umbrella Touring Exhibition: Mabo Kara Art
The solo exhibition by Gail Mabo, Mabo Kara Art, in Torres Strait Island creole language means Mabo My Art, will open on 11, June 2014, at the Australian High Commission in Singapore. This is the first solo exhibition for a North Queensland Indigenous artist and Umbrella Member at the High Commission in Singapore. Gail Mabo has produced 29 stunning new works for the show including; linocut prints, monotype prints, screen prints and acrylic paintings on canvas. The exhibition came about last year when Umbrella Studio Director Vicki Salisbury, travelled to Singapore to install and open Compact Prints 2012 at the James Cook University campus in Singapore. The new City Lane in Flinders Street Mall have commissioned street artist, Fintan Magee, to create a significant art mural on the site. Fintan will be in Townsville in mid-May to create the work, as well as deliver a free artist talk 7pm Saturday 17 May.
