Susan Nampitjin Peters’ latest body of work features experimental works engaging with the materiality of hessian, plant matter, ochres and her lore and culture. The title Ngumban is the artist’s grandmother’s name.
Peters is a contemporary artist of the Walmajarri people (Tanami desert of South East Kimberleys, Western Australia) who currently lives in Townsville. She comes from a family of painters. Her Indigenous culture is often reflected in contemporaneous pictorials of bush plants, foods, medicine and native ecology. Through her wider art practice she experiments with a range of art media and traditions ranging from painting to printmaking.
Exhibitions and Creative Sparks projects also on display 14 August – 27 September: Liminal Space (Jenny Mulcahy) | Our Internal Shadows (Tony Lamont) | Semiotics of the Bathroom (Sonia Ward)
