10/08/2013The Mangrove Project
On Saturday 24 August, the Barrier Reef Orchestra will be once again delighting audiences with their latest event CONTRASTS. As part of this evening they will be performing a 15 minute work titled, Mangroves by Australian Composer Peter Sculthorpe. This musical performance event will be enhanced by a digital projection, to be projected on a screen on stage, near the orchestra. The concept behind the visuals is to present the unique Mangroves landscape using visual projections to create a multisensory experience. The film captures various aspects, filmed at different times of the day and night of the flora and fauna and other “magical” elements of Mangrove locations around Townsville. The project was a partnership between the BRO, ABC Open and Umbrella Studio. The artistic director Michael Bromage from ABC Open, facilitated the project with 7 emerging Townsville filmmakers who appreciate the unique Mangroves environment. Watch the behind the scenes video

Congratulations to Vicki Salisbury – Director Umbrella Studio, Gail Mabo – Artist and Jenny Lane -Townsville City Councillor Culture Champions is a Queensland Government initiative celebrating Queensland’s arts and culture champions in our communities: good people doing great work in the arts and cultural sector that can be an inspiration for others. On Thursday 27 June, three locals received acknowledgment as Cultural Champions from Ian Walker, Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts. Mr Walker explained that, “Arts Queensland wants to shine a light on these and other dynamic Queenslanders so they can be an inspiration to others. It’s about giving kudos to our leading and emerging talent, and to our arts sector’s passionate supporters. It’s also about unearthing people who do amazing work in their communities but get little recognition, and engaging in ideas and discussions that celebrate arts for all Queenslanders”.
25/06/2013Light on the Fringe Project Update
At the first Light on the Fringe workshop, we were shown examples of some great projection festivals all around the world – particularly VIVID SYDNEY. Robert Crispe introduced us to some software packages that can be used for interactive artwork and projection mapping. We were told how many projectors we would have to work with (from MAAP Media Bank), and got to check out the carpark and wall space for the projections. We decided to use three projectors for the wall, one projector to be used on something else using Mad Mapper, one projector for some kind of game, and one for an interactive work. At the second workshop we got to know participants a little better and showed each other our work. Robert then presented us with a tutorial in the AfterEffects software where we created video art using different filters and effects using our existing work or footage….
