UMBRELLA TALK – A Global Art Perspective: Contemporary art as a cultural and economic barometer

19/06/2013

Professor Stephen Naylor has traveled around the world attending the planet’s most prestigious contemporary art festivals and Biennials. This presentation places contemporary art in the spotlight using some recent theory plus anecdotes and observations. A case study of Australia’s representation in the Venice Biennale, 1954 through to the present day, will provide a context to demonstrate the benefits of contemporary art as potential barometer for economic, political and cultural ‘outwardness’ in national and international affairs.
