Murris in Ink: Townsville Hospital Commision Completed

25/06/2012

Congratulations to Murris in Ink Printmakers: Gail Mabo, Aicey Zaro, Bai Kabi, Karen Doolan, Shirley Collins, James Doyle for the completion of Sea and Sky, our Country and its Creatures a  series of monoprints reflecting health and healing.

22 monoprints were installed in the Medical Imaging waiting room and corridor of the new Townsville Hospital Expansion. The prints were created in the Studio Downstairs early this year during an intensive masterclass with Theo Tremblay. The themes and colours of the monoprints connect with the natural environment. The artwork in the corridor will help way finding through subtle transitions in colour and hue. The artworks contain the spirit of place and links with past and future generations, cultural objects and traditions that have sustained Indigenous groups since the Dreamtime.

Unfortunately, the percentages of Indigenous patients in the Townsville Hospital are in excess of the relative contribution to the Townsville population, at the last census. Indigenous patient intake has increased to 25% of the patients in the hospital. This series of monoprints with Indigenous themes will welcome Indigenous patients, their families and visitors and give viewers a sense of pride and comfort.
