Update from Aber
20/09/2013
Update from Aber: Umbrella artist member Jenny Mulcahy has embarked on her sensational three month residency at the Aberystwyth Art Centre.
It is now two weeks into my residency and much of that time has been spent setting up my studio, gathering materials and sorting I.T. connections. I have also had my first play with a variety of local clays, all of which are very nice to work with…..even the terracotta, which I normally loathe and avoid as I find it sticky and unpleasant to work with.
I am sharing the flat at Godre’r Glas with two other artists, Tereza, a Czech photographer who is based in London and Endel, a performance/mixed media artist from Cork, Ireland. As well as being flat mates our studios are located close together which will be good as we’ll be able to see and discuss each other’s work as it progresses.
I have been really lucky as my arrival coincided with the last week or so of a perfect Welsh summer and I have tried to make the most of this sunny weather while it lasted. Aberystwyth is extremely picturesque and invites exploration with lots of interesting little side streets, old buildings, and even castle ruins which dominate the landscape above the Promenade. I had one really magic and memorable day, where I was able to wander through the town, down along the Promenade, and sit, dangling my legs over the sea wall whilst eating hot chips drenched in vinegar…………really soaking up the sea side holiday atmosphere…. Donkey rides would have made it perfect and just like a scene from an earlier century (or an Enid Blyton story!), however the rides had unfortunately stopped a week earlier.
I am so glad to have had that brief period of fine weather as it has now turned autumnal with cold winds and rain. Good weather for concentrating on research!
I have made numerous visits to the Welsh National Library, where I now have a Reader’s card enabling me to access documents for my research, and also to the Aberystwyth Museum which has an eclectic collection of items relating to local history. I am looking forward to making further archaeological and genealogical discoveries that will provide historical reference points, enabling me to further develop concepts for new work.

I enjoyed catching up with your latest venture, Jenny. I am also enjoying living in Montville, feeling rather a long way from my Townsville associates, but finding an interesting community in arts, gardens and generally lots of friends here. Best wishes for a continuing productive time in Wales. Best wishes, Adrianne
