October news from Aberystwyth
30/10/2013Eight weeks into my residency, the time is flying and the weather is definitely changing with violent storms over the weekend a precursor to winter weather.
The last few weeks have been busy with a trip to northern Wales to visit a new gallery space in Ruthin and then on to the Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno. Both beautiful spaces with interesting exhibitions by U.K artists. On the way home we stopped briefly at a slate quarry and Edel (Irish installation artist) and I took photographs and grabbed a few samples.
We had both been intrigued by the slate hills we walked over a few weeks earlier on the coastal track from Aberystwyth to Borth. The track was very narrow and in many places on the very edge of steep cliffs overhanging the sea. When we reached a small cove we could see that the cliffs were composed of nothing but layer upon layer of slate…. Easy to imagine pulling a piece out and causing a total collapse of the cliff.
I have been enjoying the changing exhibitions and performances at the Art Centre and at the Gas Gallery in Aberystwyth. One of the highlights being a performance by harpist Harriet Earis who was a joy to watch as well as listen to.
Last week I travelled to Stoke on Trent where I stayed for a few days to enjoy the amazing work on show for the British Ceramics Biennial. Very disappointed however to learn that ceramics is now only taught as a major discipline in two U.K. universities.
We gave our artist talks a few weeks ago and are now preparing for the Open Studio day which is scheduled for the 21st November. A trip to Cardiff is planned for the 19th and I’m off to London on the 22nd so it will be a full week.
The pictures shown are of a coastal walk, slate quarry & harpist Harriet tuning her harps.
